You then go further on your motorcycles provided to you by us along with our team. For other travelers, who are not in for a bike tour, most ideal approach to arrive at Upper Mustang is to fly to Jomsom from Pokhara. The best part about the flight from Pokhara to Jomsom is the chance to observe the awesome deepest canyon shaped by the Kali Gandaki River. From Jomsom, one needs to trek through the stream till the town of Kagbeni. To travel past this point, you need an upper Mustang permit. From Kagbeni, the path heads to the town of Tangbe, trailed by the town of Chele. From Charang, the trip heads to the capital of Upper Mustang – the delightful walled city of Lo Manthang.
Getting around Upper Mustang
To explore this locale, one needs to take up hiking, trekking, cycling, motorcycling and that too under the direction of local guides. Only a limited number of people are allowed in the Upper Mustang region, and getting prior permissions for entry to upper mustang is absolutely necessary.
The Upper Mustang Region in Mustang Valley and the Annapurna Circuit in Lower Mustang has gained immense popularity among adventurers across our planet (may be other planets as well).
Mustang is subdivided into two areas: Upper Mustang and Lower Mustang. These two distinct segments of Mustang are very different from each other. Upper Mustang is a cold dessert region which is mostly barren and Lower Mustang is a lot greener that has many holy Buddhist sites.
Mustang Valley is an untouched and distant locale in the Nepalese Himalayas. Ethnically, the individuals of Mustangs are Tibetans. Economy in this district is run mainly through tourism and farming.
Both Lower and Upper Mustang are beautiful and adventurous but of the two, Upper Mustang is more remote and has a restricted access. The local villagers & their rich social legacy here have next to no contact with the remainder of Nepal.
Upper Mustang is situated in the Northern side of Nepal, 206 km by air from Kathmandu and 650 kilometers by road. The capital city, Lo Manthang lies just 20 kilometers from the south fringe of Tibet.
Since this area is isolated from the world, the Tibetan lifestyle that continues here is something that has vanished even in Tibet. Tibet, which went under the Chinese rule in 1950, saw the disruption of their monasteries; this has not been the case with Mustang. It is presently home to a few ancient monasteries that have been safeguarded by local people.
Upper Mustang was opened to non-Nepali tourists in 1992 and even today, access is exceptionally limited. To travel to Upper Mustang, tourists need a permit and must be accompanied all the time along with a registered tour guide. The charge for Upper Mustang travel permit is around US$500 for 10 days and an extra US$50 for an additional day.
There are several motor biking opportunities in this area, but it is only for the riders who can go withstand harsh & rough climate of the Himalayas. We are among the few tour operators acclaimed in arranging these mesmerizing motorcycle tours of Nepal. Other than adventure, the Mustang Valley is renowned for Muktinath, a holy Buddhist and Hindu temple.
Another fascinating story of this valley is the 55 cave works of art that portray the life of Lord Buddha. These 12th century artistic creations were found in a cave, which is somewhat crumpled. For cultural festivals, the Upper Mustang has picked up prominence of holding one of the significant annual celebrations in the district known as the Tiji Festival. This three-day-long festival in Lo-Manthang is celebrated in recognition of Buddha’s triumph over the evil that caused dissonance in the area.
